new york city for the second time

update on my two short days in New York City!! (: trying to recall what i have done during these two days, but realised that my memories of the time spent in new york is pretty faint. =X i guess it's because we have been to new york before, and we have walked around new york several times, hence no more excitement, no more new insights.

after checking in with the hostel, we took a shower and set off to explore NYC! there was a chinese looking bakery situated below our hostel, so i decided to enter and see what they have inside. best sight- Egg tarts! i love egg tarts! especially portugese egg tarts. but anyway, we decided to pamper ourselves and bought one egg tart each. Wanling said thank you in Cantonese to the lady behind the register and there was this shocked look on her face. Funny!

first stop. NYC's very own Chinatown!

Chinatown in NYC is really CHINAtown. haha. filled up with people from China. In fact, i felt like i was in China all of a sudden and i tend to forget that im still in USA. Stalls selling fruits, fish, meat etc were common sights. Deprived of fruits, we bought 7 plums for $2 for ourselves despite it looking a little unappetizing. (it was sweet and nice after washing very thoroughly though!) first time i bought something while speaking in Mandarin in the United States! (:

came across a stall that sells soya bean drink. so we decided to search for soya bean curd. But alas, we enquired at almost all the stores that might have a chance of selling bean curd, but never managed to find one. =( sobs. i really miss soya beancurd.

stopped at Hong Kong Station for lunch though. Vitasoy- a nice replacement for my cravings for soya bean curd. haha (: curry fishballs, sausage and instant noodles. although this meal may look simple, it was rather pricey still! =S

Did some more exploring after that. Visited the World Trade Centre site, went Battery Park and went down New York Stock Exchange. (: Then it started becoming a little dark, so we decided to take the subway back to a station called “Little Italy” and walk back to our hostel.

While walking back to the hostel, we sort of lost our way because we got our direction mixed up. At this moment, a couple walked past us and wanling whispered to me: “Confirm Singaporean, the girl just said- it’s so hot here man.” We decided to ask them for directions, and the first thing the guy asked us was: “Are you both Singaporean?” haha. It’s so funny how we can always recognize fellow Singaporeans by the way we speak. Found out later that the guy was working here and his friend came down to visit him, so he’s bringing her around. Haha it’s always nice to meet Singaporeans in USA, especially when he told me that his sister is also from SMU! (:

Went back to the hostel after that and had a good night sleep. First night without air condition though, however, I was too tired to be bothered about that. =(

The next day.. was admin day. Reason was because we had a lot of matters to settle before we can leave for Niagara Falls the next day. Went to the bank to withdraw all the money we have inside- my account has $0.27 inside now, printed some important documents and exchanged US currency to Canadian currency to prepare for our tour to Niagara Falls Canada (:

Was so tired after everything was settled, so we decided to have Wendys for lunch. Wendy’s a big fastfood restaurant and it is also as commonly seen around town as MacDonalds. Not fantastic though. =( Both of us didn’t really like it very much.

Went on to do more walking till I realized that I was sick of walking somemore. The air in NYC is pretty bad, and the traffic is scarily noisy. =( we decided to stop by a really cute MacDonalds at Broadway for a sinful snack.

We bought the pretzel ourselves from k-mart. It was a huge pack of mini pretzels and we chose to eat it with our Oreo Mcflurry. The original price for the pretzels was $2.69 per pack I think, but we only bought it for $1. haha Wanling managed to dig out a packet that was about to be expired in August 2008, and it was the only pack left with a $1 sticker stuck on it. HAPPY!

Did a little bit more shopping. Bought myself another jacket designed by Amanda Bynes. I love the jacket. It was seriously love at first sight. Ok never mind.

Took the subway back when it started becoming really dark. Unfortunately, we boarded the wrong train and went all the way from Manhattan New York to Brooklyn. Asked a man for directions and he told us: “Delancy Street? You need to go back to the city, you need to go back to Manhattan! You are in Brooklyn now!” SIAN. Alighted and boarded another train only to realize we were still going the wrong direction. In a nutshell, we kept alighting and boarding until we finally managed to make our way back to the hostel and have a good night sleep. (: the cutest thing about the whole subway mistake was, me and wanling were calm throughout. In fact, I felt that the subway was really safe compared to the first time I rode it. I guess we DO learn from experience (:
